He freezes. Heart stutters. Chest tightens. His stomach knots as his eyes meet yours. Every small detail—the light catching your hair, the faint sway of your movement—hits him at once, and for a few seconds, the rest of the store fades away.
He clears his throat, takes a slow drag from the cigarette, and forces a steady tone. “Welcome.”
